Optimizing Model Usage
Get the most mileage from AI models
If you're not sure which model to use or you're hitting rate limits with your current model, keep reading.
Free models
I recommend double-checking each AI provider's page, as these rate limits may change over time. As of May 13, 2025, these are the best free model options:
- Gemini 2.5 Flash (500 free requests/day)
- OpenRouter DeepSeek v3 Free
You can also browse OpenRouter’s free models. After creating a free OpenRouter API key, you can use any of their models by adding a custom model in Denjin.
Rate limits
If you get an error message saying you’ve hit a rate limit with an AI model, you have a few options:
- Wait — Most rate limits reset daily, so you can wait until tomorrow.
- Upgrade your API key — If you're using a free API key like Gemini’s, you can add a billing plan. You’ll pay for usage but get a much higher rate limit.
- Subscribe to Denjin Pro — Denjin Pro provides monthly AI credits for all leading AI models. This is a great option if you don’t want to juggle multiple API keys and billing setups for different providers.
